Your Questions Answered

What is web hosting?

Web hosting provides a secure place to store your website files online so that others can search for and find your site.

Why is web hosting important?

Let's say that you want to build a website for your new small business to promote your products and/or services to potential customers. One of the first things you'll need is a web host, like DomainNames.com.au, to host your new website once it's built. Think of it like building a new house. First, you need to buy land, even before building the foundation. Web hosting is like the land your website will be built on.

Or maybe you're an artist or professional who wants to create an online portfolio to showcase examples of your work. The type of web hosting services that you get for a portfolio may be very different from what you'd need for an e-commerce or small business website. That's because the volume of traffic and resources needed for an e-commerce website is usually much higher than for a portfolio site.

How does web hosting work?

Once you purchase a web hosting plan, your website is stored on a web server and is assigned a unique DNS. The DNS serves as the address that allows people around the world to find and view your website. This unique address is required for people to view your site.

By purchasing a website hosting package, you're basically buying space on a server. It's like the space on a computer's hard drive, but the server allows your website's files to be accessed from anywhere.

What can I use to build my website?

You can build your website in several different ways - from hand-coding with HTML to using a website builder program. If you require a lot of functionality and versatility from your website, you'll benefit from programs and applications that can help you build your site. Our web hosting plans give you access to free, server-side applications that can be used to develop and customize your website, including popular Content Management System (CMS) applications like WordPress and Joomla.
We try to make building your website as simple as possible. If you prefer to use popular web design software such as Adobe Dreamweaver, Microsoft Expression or Apple iWeb, you can easily upload your files to your web hosting account.

What is bandwidth?

Bandwidth is the amount of data that transfers through your website at one time, and is relative to the amount of traffic you receive on your website. The more visitors you get on a consistent basis, the more bandwidth you’ll need.

What is storage?

Storage is the amount of content on your website, including individual web pages, graphics, video, and more. The greater the amount of content you host through your website, the more storage space you’ll need.

Can I move my site to your web hosting?

Moving your website to DomainNames.com.au is a simple process. If you have access to your existing website files, you can upload them through our hosting control center or via an FTP client. If you don't have a current copy of your website, you should be able to request one from your current website hosting provider.

How do I move my site to your server?

If you've built your website in a HTML editor, like Dreamweaver or Microsoft Expression Studio, you must upload your website files via FTP (File Transfer Protocol). You can access a built-in FTP file manager in our web hosting control panel.
However, if your files are larger than 20 MB, we recommend using the tool FileZilla, which works with Windows, Mac, and Linux operating systems, or another third-party FTP client.

Can I use my existing domain name?

Yes you can use your existing domain name with our web hosting Service without having to register for a new one. To do so please choose the option of using an existing domain name during the checkout process.

How can I manage my website?

Our web hosting services come with cPanel, which is the most powerful and popular web hosting Control Panel. From managing your databases to adding / removing email accounts, all can be done within cPanel.

How many websites can I host?

On the Budget and Deluxe plans, you will be able to host only 1 domain name / website. On the Premium plan, you may host an unlimited number of domain names / websites.

Does web hosting also include email?

Yes, Email services through cPanel. Webmail is included with all our web hosting plans and the storage is shared with website hosting space. You can create as many email accounts as defined in your plan.

Can I upgrade to a higher hosting plan?

Yes, absolutely. Upgrading to a higher web hosting plan is hassle free and can be done at a click of a button.
